Whedon is once again directing the scene in Dollhouse, in what he has called “the biggest surprise of my career” – a second season for his genre-bending, mind-altering science-fiction allegory about stolen identities.
The cautionary conspiracy tale about empaths, so-called “dolls” whose identities have been wiped clean and imprinted with new personalities, debuted earlier this year to mixed reviews. Critics were torn between those who found the concept engaging and provocative, and those who found it off-putting and pretentious.
That was then, this is now. Whedon, the auteur-writer-filmmaker who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Emmy Award-winning musical tragicomedy Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, no longer cares what the critics say about his latest TV creation.
All he cares about now is that he has a second chance to tell the story he wanted to tell all along. (more…)
Dollhouse is once again open for business and creator Joss Whedon sat down with reporters to talk about lives, the loves, and the cool guest stars coming up in the new season. Dollhouse returns to Fox on September 25 at 9:00.
Dollhouse was pretty close to not getting that second season pick-up. Why do you think Fox changed their minds?
Joss: I think it’s the nature of the business and the nature of the fan base. The nature of the fan base is they’re in it for the long haul, and they’re nurturing, and they’re intense about it and they will see it through. They will stick with it and that means years after it’s cancelled. Firefly still sells, Buffy still sells, and that’s also a business thing for the studio. They’re in it for the long haul because they know the long haul is how my work pays off. I don’t make hit shows. I make shows that stick around that people come to long after they would have stopped generating revenue in the old system.
With the advent of DVD and the eventual monetization of Online, there’s a market there that exists beyond your Nielsen numbers, and the fans showing up and DVRing, and buying a DVD, and proving on all my other projects that they don’t do these things lightly, that it runs deep in them, means that the base doesn’t have to be as broad for the studio to think it’s worth it to try and eke out another season. The new season of Dollhouse is fast approaching – though not fast enough for its legion of fans (we still have to wait until next Friday, September 25). So we had a ton of questions for sometimes tight-lipped creator Joss Whedon when we spoke with him during a press conference call yesterday. Though he didn’t spill everything, we did learn about what’s in store for the characters this season, where the central story arc is going, and what roles newcomers Summer Glau and Ray Wise will play – heck, we even got Joss to talk a little bit about Cabin in the Woods. Read the interview below, and look for our review of the season premiere next week.
How will Echo, with the many characters she’s flashing to, come in to her own this season?
Basically through force of will. She did have all those personalities dumped into her at once, and as we pick up, we are going to find out that that is starting to affect her. She is much more directed, and driven – even in her Doll state, she is growing and learning. She understands she has a mission now, to get everyone back to their personalities.
How many seasons do you see Dollhouse going? (more…)
Joss Whedon’s television series Dollhouse is a drama about a young woman, known as Echo (Eliza Dushku), who as a member of an illegal organization, called the Dollhouse, has her memories and personality wiped clean and imprinted with new ones, in order to fulfill assignments catering to the wealthy and powerful.
After a rocky first season, the show got renewed for Season 2, which premieres on September 25th, much to the surprise of the show’s creator and cast. This time around, show creator/executive producer/writer/director Joss Whedon admits to being more confident and assured about what the series really is, at its core, and says he’ll be making the most of it this season.
During a set visit for the series, that included a tour of the mysterious Dollhouse itself, Joss Whedon talked about the roller coaster ride that he went on for Season 1, and gave hints at his plan for Season 2. (more…)
If you need a reason to love Comic-Con, you would need look no further than to experiences like today’s Dollhouse panel.
First we got to watch the infamous lost episode of Dollhouse, “Epitaph One,” on giant screens with an audience of fellow fans, and then Dollhouse boss Joss Whedon, who did not come to his reputation as a great storyteller by accident, sat down and talked to us about the future of his dark drama Dollhouse.
Joss was joined by star Eliza Dushku in a glittering gold dress, and the two faced down questions about how “Epitaph One” will change the show, how the cast is changing for season two (a fan favorite Buffy-Angel actor will be visiting!), and what he’s really warning us about when he’s talking about a zombie apocalypse… (more…)
Today’s E! Online Dollhouse-fest starts off with the fantastic Enver Gjokaj dialing in from his native Albania to answer our burning questions about his role as Victor on Fox’s Dollhouse, which, of course, returns tonight at 9 p.m. on Fox.
Have you fantasized about certain assignments you’d like to see Victor take, just for fun as an actor?
Yes. I would like to shoot a rocket launcher into a busload of bad guys from a moving car. I’ve informed Joss of that, but still no word back so I can only assume he’s looking for a way to fit it into future episodes.
Is there anything you can tease about Victor’s background, before he was a doll?
We know he has a military background and that something bad happened. Joss and I have talked briefly about that, but nothing is official. (more…)
Most of the attention on “Dollhouse” has gone toward Eliza Dushku or Joss Whedon, or maybe even a little Tahmoh Penikett love. Enver Gjokaj, though, will play a major role in the show, shaping the lives of other characters. We caught up with him while he was in Italy hanging out.
Where’s the name ‘Enver Gjokaj’ from?
It’s a very common Albanian name. My father’s Albanian and my mom is from the States.
How did you get involved with “Dollhouse”?
I fell into it, as luck would have it. I got the [scripts] and they were unbelievable. I went in and auditioned for Joss, and he seemed completely unimpressed. and I walked out of the room convinced that he was never going to see me again. And things went well after that. (more…)
